I don’t know why America ignores the fact that we have so many people living in poverty. It’s sad to know that some parents and families fall under the category of working poor. How can we fix this major social issue? Who is responsible for this large number of people living below the poverty line? There are so many unanswered questions that need to be addressed as a country we have to do better.
I have seen so many of my peers fall victim to the environment. I didn’t realize that I was poor until I went to high school and I watched my mom struggle just like most children in my neighborhood. I knew that I wanted my life to be different from my mom’s; I didn’t have a  plan but I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t live under the same conditions. Most kids I grew up with didn’t make it out of high school and had no attention of pursuing anything more than a high school diploma. Making it out of my neighborhood was the first step to promote change within my life I had to surround myself with people who had dreams with a positive attitude. I never wanted to forget where I came from and always felt like as a community we could all do better.
Giving back to my community is very important to me and providing resources for people living in poverty. Living in poverty can be very stressful for everyone and children suffers the most. I wanted to pursue a career as a social worker the moment I learned the meaning behind their job description. As a social worker I plan to help my community and provide opportunities for the next generation.  I want to hold meeting for young girls to come out and have a platform to speak whatever on their mind and seek any help that could benefit them while gaining a mentor. I also want to give back to the single moms who are considered the working poor in which they struggle to make ends meet. My ultimate goal is to help individuals seek the resources to help them excel and promote change within their lifestyle.
As a black social worker I want to help more families like mines who want a way out but don’t know the first step to take. I know there are several drop out who thinks it’s too late to go back to school but their bills are exceeding their income. There are families that has no financial stability and have no idea what it means to have a bank account. Some children are raising themselves and their younger siblings also going without hot meals and proper guidance while their parents are out working trying to make ends meet. There are so many issues that need to be address if we want to see change and social workers are hands on and they can help in several areas.  It’s important for social workers to earn trust from people so they can better assist them.
